In 1949 New York City, Holocaust survivor Herman Broder (Ron Silver) makes a living as a ghostwriter for a Jewish rabbi while wrestling with post-war depression and finding himself entangled with three women. Married to Yadwiga (Margaret Sophie Stein), he carries on an affair with Masha (Lena Olin), a married woman, only for matters to grow more complicated when Tamara (Anjelica Huston), his first wife believed killed in a concentration camp, resurfaces in America, forcing him to confront life, love, and loss amid these intricate relationships.
